Scene 44 of 61 · ≈ 2 min on screen · Last scene of act two
Bear wishes the woman he loves would love him back. The wish comes true — and her devotion becomes a violence neither of them can stop.
Bear in his comfort zone of quiet, unspoken longing for Nicky, grieving his cat and coached by Ian to stay silent rather than confess.
Bear needs Nicky to love him back, sharpened by trivia night's proximity to her and Ian, and the purchase of the willow as an almost-joke wish object.
Bear breaks the willow and makes the wish, crossing from wanting to actively, magically pursuing Nicky's love.
Bear adapts to Nicky's escalating strangeness, paying the cost of denial and rationalization as the relationship forms under increasingly disturbing terms.
Nicky confesses her love and the relationship becomes real — Bear gets exactly what he wished for, at the exact moment the cracks (the dad lie) start to show.
At the hospital, Nicky dances erratically and refuses treatment, and the nurse won't force her under informed consent.
Bear reluctantly lets Nicky hold his hand as he brings her back into his house.
Bear confronts Nicky about the self-harm and demands she just be normal; she collapses sobbing that she can be anything he wants, then abruptly propositions him as an emotionless "Normal," taunting him with the words "One Wish Willow" before leading him to bed.
This scene
Bear, wide awake, is cradled by Nicky who is fast asleep.
DING! Bear's phone blares. He quickly silences it and dims the brightness. A text from Sarah: How is she?
Bear cautiously replies: She's okay. Sleeping now.
Sarah: How are you?
Bear ponders.
Bear: pretty good actually. We worked things out.
Sarah: I need to tell you something.
Sarah: Multiple things...
Sarah: I'm at the park.
Bear carefully eyes Nicky, still sleeping. He gently removes her arm from his shoulder and untangles her leg. Sneaking toward the hallway, he moves one foot at a time.
NICKY (O.S.)
(a faint whisper)
Bear.
Bear freezes.
BEAR
(matching her volume)
Yeah.
NICKY (O.S.)
(whispering)
Kill me, Bear. Please.
Bear slowly turns to face her. She lies in the same position. Her eyes seem closed, but it's too dark to tell.
BEAR
What?
NICKY
She's sleeping... It's me.
Bear's eyes widen as the friend he once knew speaks.
BEAR
(normal volume)
You are you, Nicky?
NICKY
(whisper)
Shh! Please, don't wake her.
Bear looks at her, then looks to the ground.
NICKY (CONT'D)
(whisper)
Too ashamed to look at her. his voice quivers as he talks.
BEAR
What would be so bad... What's so
bad about being with me?
A long beat.
NICKY
I've never been with you, Bear.
Bear contemplates his actions. Slowly, he turns and exits the room. Despite her pleas, Bear shows no empathy.
NICKY (O.S.) (CONT'D)
(quietly begging)
Bear, please, please...
