Scene 105 of 110 · ≈ 1 min on screen · Act three
In 1932 Mississippi, gifted sharecropper-bluesman Sammie Moore wants to make a life in the blues beyond his preacher father's rules, but the opening night of his cousins' juke joint becomes a siege by a vampire offering the community belonging at the price of its freedom.
The legend and prologue frame Sammie's segregated Delta life under his father's church and the twins' shadow.
Sammie wants the freedom, recognition, and musical life he imagines beyond the plantation.
He leaves the plantation with the twins, enters the wider Delta, and helps build their juke joint.
Sammie learns the blues is sacred, meets the room's people, and tries to claim a place among musicians and lovers.
His performance unites the juke with ancestral music and gives him the belonging and voice he wanted.
The music attracts Remmick's vampires, who take the juke's people and force Sammie to pay for the freedom he tasted.
Sammie escapes through the window to the river while Remmick pursues him through the night.
Stack overpowers Smoke on the catwalk, but Smoke's protected mojo bag stops the bite and forces the brothers' final choice.
At the river, Sammie uses the silver guitar resonator to wound Remmick before Smoke stakes him at sunrise.
This scene
Smoke limps over to the truck. Sammie follows behind him holding the tattered guitar neck. Smoke removes a large box from the trunk and tosses Sammie the car key.
SMOKE
Go home. And bury that somewhere.
SAMMIE
I can’t. It’s Charlie Patton’s.
SMOKE
What? Who told you that?
SAMMIE
Stack. Said ya’ll won it off him
in a bet.
Smoke shakes his head.
SMOKE
That lyin’ son of a bitch. That’s
our daddy’s guitar.
Sammie thinks on this and looks down at it.
SAMMIE
Ya’ll daddy was a musician?
Smoke looks back at the mill for a beat. Then back to Sammie.
SMOKE
Go home.
Sammie stares at Smoke for beat, then climbs into the car and pulls off.
Smoke watches him ride off into the distance.
MOMENTS LATER
Smoke lumbers to the entrance of the mill, carrying the tool box.
He reaches into his pocket and pulls out Stack’ s dog tag and his tobacco and papers. He tries to roll himself a cigarette, but his hands shake too much and he drops it.
His eyes well, but he pushes it down before they spill- a final deposit to a well he thought he shut many years ago.
Smoke pulls his knife and with one hand, and pulls the leather necklace holding his mojo bag with his other, cuts the necklace and allows the bag to fall to the ground.
He opens the tool box, revealing a war chest. Parts for a BROWNING and a THOMPSON SUBMACHINE GUN, as well as two HA ND GRENADES.
Smoke assembles the weapons.
