Scene 24 of 110 · ≈ 1 min on screen · Act one
In 1932 Mississippi, gifted sharecropper-bluesman Sammie Moore wants to make a life in the blues beyond his preacher father's rules, but the opening night of his cousins' juke joint becomes a siege by a vampire offering the community belonging at the price of its freedom.
The legend and prologue frame Sammie's segregated Delta life under his father's church and the twins' shadow.
Sammie wants the freedom, recognition, and musical life he imagines beyond the plantation.
The teenager spots thieves at the truck, and Smoke shoots one and cripples the other to make a point.
Smoke arranges medical help and asks Bo to have Grace make signs for the opening.
Lisa crosses the street to summon her mother Grace from the other grocery store.

LISA
Daddy wants you.
Grace finishes up.
GRACE
Look after the register here now.
Lisa slides into her mother’s place as Grace hands off the bag with a smile. And heads f or the exit, her smile fading from her face.
