Scene 36 of 110 · ≈ 1 min on screen · Act one
In 1932 Mississippi, gifted sharecropper-bluesman Sammie Moore wants to make a life in the blues beyond his preacher father's rules, but the opening night of his cousins' juke joint becomes a siege by a vampire offering the community belonging at the price of its freedom.
The legend and prologue frame Sammie's segregated Delta life under his father's church and the twins' shadow.
Sammie wants the freedom, recognition, and musical life he imagines beyond the plantation.
Stack recruits the powerful Cornbread and Therise to help build and protect the new juke joint.
The newly assembled crew travels toward the mill as the opening-night operation gathers momentum.
Bo and Grace load food, paint, and supplies while Lisa and her grandmother watch from the store.
This scene
Smoke and Stack pull up to the Lumber Mill and their cars unload with Black Folks who have shown up to work.
Stack watches as Smoke helps Annie down from the truck. Stack tips his hat to Annie and smiles, she gives a lukewarm look back. The twins hug then get to work.
Smoke’s car is unloaded. Liquor, beer, groceries, a load of two by fours, a piano, and a few rifles.
