Scene 52 of 110 · ≈ 1 min on screen · Act one
In 1932 Mississippi, gifted sharecropper-bluesman Sammie Moore wants to make a life in the blues beyond his preacher father's rules, but the opening night of his cousins' juke joint becomes a siege by a vampire offering the community belonging at the price of its freedom.
The legend and prologue frame Sammie's segregated Delta life under his father's church and the twins' shadow.
Sammie wants the freedom, recognition, and musical life he imagines beyond the plantation.
He leaves the plantation with the twins, enters the wider Delta, and helps build their juke joint.
Smoke insists on real dollars while Stack and Annie argue that the exhausted locals need welcome more than strict business.
Sammie listens from the hallway as Smoke rejects credit in the name of protecting the business.
Stack persuades Smoke to let the locals pay with what they have on opening night.
This scene
Smoke walks past Sammie.
SMOKE
You better play your ass off on
that stage tonight.
Sammie watches the Patron who takes another swig of corn liquor.
PATRON
Goddamn this good!
Almost on cue, more PATRONS start to trickle in. Sammie looks around amazed. Delta Slim taps him.
DELTA SLIM
I guess I better get started...
