Scene 75 of 110 · ≈ 1 min on screen · Act two
In 1932 Mississippi, gifted sharecropper-bluesman Sammie Moore wants to make a life in the blues beyond his preacher father's rules, but the opening night of his cousins' juke joint becomes a siege by a vampire offering the community belonging at the price of its freedom.
The legend and prologue frame Sammie's segregated Delta life under his father's church and the twins' shadow.
Sammie wants the freedom, recognition, and musical life he imagines beyond the plantation.
He leaves the plantation with the twins, enters the wider Delta, and helps build their juke joint.
Sammie learns the blues is sacred, meets the room's people, and tries to claim a place among musicians and lovers.
His performance unites the juke with ancestral music and gives him the belonging and voice he wanted.
Remmick, Joan, and Bert arrive outside the opening-night juke after hearing Sammie's music.
Smoke refuses the drifters entry, turning a suspicious visit into the siege of the juke joint.
The survivors choose to stay inside and let Mary investigate the outsiders, entering the vampire problem on their own terms.
Stack and Mary have sex, and a fresh bite mark on Mary's shoulder exposes the danger around them.
Smoke warns Sammie away from the musician's life and Mound Bayou, but Sammie chooses his own freedom.
Smoke breaks up a loaded-dice fight, restores order, and sends Sammie to fetch Stack.
This scene
We see what Sammie sees... Stack and Mary on the ground, Mary on top and in passionate rhythm.
SAMMIE
Jesus.
Sammie quickly shuts the door back and smiles.
He looks at Delta Slim who laughs.
Sammie makes his way back to Smoke who stands alongside Annie who is helping him tend to Gambler 2 who now is drinking from a BOTTLE OF WINE for the pain.
SMOKE
You get him?
SAMMIE
Nah.
SMOKE
Why not?
SAMMIE
(whispers)
He was getting some nookie.
SMOKE
I don’t give a fuck what he was
doing I told you to bring him.
SAMMIE
I ain't doin’ that by myself.
SMOKE
Shit!
Smoke heads for the back room but notices Delta Slim watching the door.
SMOKE (CONT’D)
Where the fuck is Cornbread?
DELTA SLIM
Building you a new outhouse, I
suppose? Nigga left to take a piss
two days ago.
SMOKE
And he left you to watch the door?
Del ta Slim lifts his beer towards Smoke.
Smoke spins off towards the back room, with Sammie on his heels.
Smoke walks up to the back room door and doesn’t break stride.
SMOKE (CONT’D)
Ya’ll get decent I’m bout to open
up.
Smoke opens the door and steps in.
