Spotlight · written by Josh Singer & Tom McCarthy · 2015
Scene 20 of 143 · ≈ 1 min on screen · Act two
The Boston Globe's Spotlight team pries open the Catholic Church's decades-long cover-up of child abuse — one sealed record, one silenced victim at a time.
Robby's Spotlight team operates comfortably inside its own routine, prospecting a modest police-corruption story under a departing editor's cover.
Baron's outsider question exposes what the paper has never done: investigate whether Cardinal Law knowingly protected an abusive priest.
Sacha's grandmother and her weekly Mass become the story's throughline for what belief costs the people closest to the reporters.
Washing dishes, Hansi asks if Sacha will tell her grandmother about the looming Church story; Sacha isn't sure there's a story yet.
Marty gets lost trying to find the Publisher's office in the Globe's unfamiliar executive wing.
Marty tells Publisher Richard Gilman he intends to sue the Church to unseal the Geoghan documents, over Gilman's warning about the paper's Catholic subscriber base.
This scene
Mike steps off an elevator and into a DUMP of an office. He eyes a small reception desk covered with FILE BOXES.
MIKE
Hello. Hello?
Mike peeks through an open door... a small office, crammed FLOOR TO CEILING with BOXES, each with GEOGHAN written on it.
PARALEGAL
Can I help you?
Mike turns. A PARALEGAL pokes her head out of a cubicle.
MIKE
Oh. Hi. I’m Mike Rezendes from the
Boston Globe. I’m here to see
Mitchell Garabedian.
PARALEGAL
He’s on a call. Please have a seat.
Mike grabs a seat, checks his watch. He hears YELLING coming from behind a closed door. Garabedian?
