Spotlight · written by Josh Singer & Tom McCarthy · 2015
Scene 42 of 143 · ≈ 1 min on screen · Act two
The Boston Globe's Spotlight team pries open the Catholic Church's decades-long cover-up of child abuse — one sealed record, one silenced victim at a time.
Robby's Spotlight team operates comfortably inside its own routine, prospecting a modest police-corruption story under a departing editor's cover.
Baron's outsider question exposes what the paper has never done: investigate whether Cardinal Law knowingly protected an abusive priest.
The team sets aside its own project and enters unfamiliar territory: survivor networks, a hostile plaintiff's lawyer, and a legal fight to unseal church records.
Cardinal Law charms Marty with stories of his own newspaper past and offers his help, but reacts with surprise when Marty insists the paper must stand alone.
Alone in his car, Marty unwraps Law's parting gift to find a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, as Phil Saviano arrives at the Globe lobby carrying a box of files.
Phil Saviano tells the Spotlight team about surviving abuse by Father Holley, describes grooming and church cover-ups, and claims thirteen abusive priests in Boston that he'd reported to the Globe years earlier and was ignored.

The light changes and Garabedian walks. Mike tags along.
MIKE
Good. You know, I never heard back
from you. I left you a couple
messages.
GARABEDIAN
I’ve been very busy. I don’t have
time for calls.
MIKE
Jeez, I’m sure you don’t. Listen,
Mitch, lemme talk to a couple of
your victims... You can sit in on
the interview, if you’re not happy
you can kill it.
GARABEDIAN
I spoke to my clients, they don’t
want to be in the press. I’m sorry.
