Tenet · written by Christopher Nolan · 2020
Scene 138 of 275 · ≈ 1 min on screen · Act two
An unnamed intelligence operative, recruited into a shadow war fought through time-inverted weapons and objects, teams with an enigmatic ally to stop a dying Russian oligarch from using technology gifted by a dying future to erase the present.
The Protagonist in his zone of comfort — a skilled, anonymous field operative, competent and confident inside the Kiev operation.
Broken by torture and 'killed,' he needs a new purpose; Fay offers one that transcends the nation-state loyalties that just got his team killed.
He enters the wholly unfamiliar situation of Tenet — the wind turbine, the password test, and Barbara's proof that time itself can run backward.
The Protagonist begins surveilling Kat at her son's school gates — he commits to using her marriage against Sator, entering the upside-down world of the operation proper.
Kat's appraisal-room scene with the forged Goya begins the relationship — with Kat, and by extension her son Max — that will carry the story's theme of what a parent will do to save a child.
The Protagonist re-approaches Kat at Amalfi to use her as his entry to Sator, formally locking him into the Sator operation rather than working it from the outside.
Neil reports the gold's traces are of unidentifiable, possibly future, origin.
Sator brings a wary Kat to assess salvaged Oslo materials in Tallinn.
Sator's convoy arrives at the Tallinn freeport as an oxygen-masked driver waits nearby.
This scene
Kat enters. Sator is at a table covered in WEAPONS.
SATOR
See, Kat? Some of my favourites...
He picks up a MACHINE GUN.
SATOR (CONT'D)
Singed but salvageable, wouldn’t
you say?
She stares at the weaponry as if she’s never seen anything like it before...
KAT
It’s not my area of expertise.
SATOR
That’s right. You’d never have
anything to do with such things.
But this is where our worlds
collide.
KAT
Andrei, what is this?
SATOR
You know perfectly well what it is,
Kat – the filthy business that put
those clothes on your back and our
boy in his school. That you thought
you could negotiate your way
around.
VOLKOV
(in Russian, subtitled)
The convoy’s due downtown in ten.
Sator checks his watch. Nods at Volkov. Turns to Kat.
SATOR
It’s time to go.
KAT
I’m not going anywhere with you.
Sator SLAMS the machine gun back down on the table. Kat FLINCHES. Sator TURNS, enraged...
SATOR
Look at me and understand – you
don’t negotiate with a tiger – you
admire a tiger, until it turns on
you and you feel its TRUE. FUCKING.
NATURE!
Sator moves towards her – Kat pulls out a gun.
KAT
Don’t...
