An unnamed intelligence operative, recruited into a shadow war fought through time-inverted weapons and objects, teams with an enigmatic ally to stop a dying Russian oligarch from using technology gifted by a dying future to erase the present.
The Protagonist in his zone of comfort — a skilled, anonymous field operative, competent and confident inside the Kiev operation.
The extraction van pulls up and the pair jump inside.
Safe in the van, the Protagonist realizes the driver has turned a gun on him.
Captured and tortured in a rail yard, the Protagonist watches the 'Target' die under interrogation and bites a cyanide pill rather than give up his team.

Fay lets that dissipate. The Protagonist closes his eyes.
PROTAGONIST (CONT'D)
Did the team get clear?
FAY
No. Private Russians, we think.
PROTAGONIST
Somebody talked.
FAY
Not you. You chose to die instead
of giving up your colleagues.
