Scene 275 of 275 · ≈ 1 min on screen · Last scene of act three
An unnamed intelligence operative, recruited into a shadow war fought through time-inverted weapons and objects, teams with an enigmatic ally to stop a dying Russian oligarch from using technology gifted by a dying future to erase the present.
The Protagonist in his zone of comfort — a skilled, anonymous field operative, competent and confident inside the Kiev operation.
Broken by torture and 'killed,' he needs a new purpose; Fay offers one that transcends the nation-state loyalties that just got his team killed.
He enters the wholly unfamiliar situation of Tenet — the wind turbine, the password test, and Barbara's proof that time itself can run backward.
Mumbai, London, Oslo, and Amalfi — he adapts to the world of inverted physics and Sator's inner circle, paying costs (Kat's trust, his own safety) to get close to the target.
The Tallinn ambush succeeds — he gets what the mission wanted, extracting the plutonium '241' from the armored convoy.
He pays a heavy price for it — Kat is shot, the material is lost to Sator anyway, and he is left not knowing whether any of it mattered.
Recovered and re-briefed by Priya, he returns to a now-familiar situation — the Tenet operation — but changed, moving to Stalsk-12 with the full picture of what's at stake.
Kat shoots Sator and tips him into the sea moments before his suicide would have triggered the algorithm — the decisive turn the whole operation was built to reach.
Kat senses she's being watched at the school gates and readies the 'posterity' phone the Protagonist gave her.
Priya orders Kat's assassination to tie up loose ends, but the Protagonist, having anticipated it, kills Priya's men and then Priya herself.
Kat leaves the warning voicemail that will loop back to save her own life.
This scene
The Protagonist watches Kat.
PROTAGONIST
I told you you’d have to start
looking differently at the world.
PRIYA
I have to tie up the loose ends.
PROTAGONIST
That was never your job.
PRIYA
Then whose was it?
The Protagonist brings his focus back to Priya.
PROTAGONIST
Mine. I realized I wasn’t working
for you. We’ve both been working
for me... I’m the protagonist.
PRIYA
Then you’d better tie up those
loose ends.
He shoots her through the seat back. She slumps forward.
PROTAGONIST
Mission accomplished.
The Protagonist looks across the road. The kids stream out... Kat sees Max coming, takes one last look at the dark car...
NEIL (V.O.)
...but it’s the bomb that didn’t go
off...
Kat shakes her head, smiling at her own folly, looks at the phone like it’s silly –
NEIL (V.O.)
...the danger no one knew was
real...
She tosses the phone carelessly into her bag.
NEIL (V.O.)
That’s the bomb with the real power
to change the world.
The Protagonist watches Kat and Max walk away. Max offers Kat his hand and we –
FADE OUT.
