Tenet · written by Christopher Nolan · 2020
Scene 71 of 275 · ≈ 1 min on screen · Act two
An unnamed intelligence operative, recruited into a shadow war fought through time-inverted weapons and objects, teams with an enigmatic ally to stop a dying Russian oligarch from using technology gifted by a dying future to erase the present.
The Protagonist in his zone of comfort — a skilled, anonymous field operative, competent and confident inside the Kiev operation.
Broken by torture and 'killed,' he needs a new purpose; Fay offers one that transcends the nation-state loyalties that just got his team killed.
He enters the wholly unfamiliar situation of Tenet — the wind turbine, the password test, and Barbara's proof that time itself can run backward.
The Protagonist begins surveilling Kat at her son's school gates — he commits to using her marriage against Sator, entering the upside-down world of the operation proper.
Kat's appraisal-room scene with the forged Goya begins the relationship — with Kat, and by extension her son Max — that will carry the story's theme of what a parent will do to save a child.
The staff member explains the vaults' oxygen-displacing halide gas fire system.
Neil explains the freeport's lockdown vulnerability to the Protagonist.
They scout the freeport's vulnerable rear wall from a tour bus.
This scene
The Protagonist looks at Neil in disbelief.
PROTAGONIST
You want to crash a plane?
NEIL
Not from the air, don’t be so
dramatic. I want to run a jet off
the taxiway, breach the rear wall,
start a fire.
PROTAGONIST
How big a plane?
NEIL
Well, that part is a little
dramatic.
They approach a MAN sitting on a harbour-front bench.
NEIL (CONT'D)
This is Mahir. His team will work
the plane.
PROTAGONIST
There can’t be passengers –
MAHIR
Norskfreight. They use the hangar
on the west side of the freeport.
PROTAGONIST
You want to crash a transport
plane? What about the crew?
MAHIR
We’ll pop the slides, chuck ’em off
–
PROTAGONIST
On the move?
MAHIR
What’s the problem? They’ll be
fine.
PROTAGONIST
It seems... bold.
MAHIR
(smiles)
‘Bold’ I’m fine with – I thought
you were going to say nuts.
PROTAGONIST
And if you get caught?
MAHIR
We won’t.
PROTAGONIST
If you do?
MAHIR
Everyone assumes terrorism, but no
one’s died. Swift extradition, then
lost in the system. It’ll barely
make the news.
NEIL
That may depend on the size of your
explosion.
MAHIR
Actually, the gold bars might get
PROTAGONIST
Gold bars?
NEIL
Norskfreight ships treasury gold
once a month.
MAHIR
We blow the back, drop the gold out
on the runway.
NEIL
No one’s going to be looking at
your building, I guarantee you.
