Scene 14 of 199 · ≈ 1 min on screen · Act one
Twenty years after leaving for the Trojan War, Odysseus fights his way home across a hostile sea only to find his kingdom overrun — and must return in disguise to reclaim his wife, his son, and his throne from the suitors laying siege to his house.
Ithaca frozen in a decade of waiting: Penelope weaving, the suitors feasting, Telemachus unheard.
Flashback: young, sighted Eumaeus is stopped by Odysseus from culling a runt puppy — the origin of Argus.
Present: Eumaeus, remembering, feels the now-dying Argus's fur and confirms Odysseus's old instinct about the dog was right.
Flashback: teenage Odysseus hunts a boar with the young Argus and the future suitors, including Sinon and Antinous, watching as boyhood friends before the war.
This scene
Eumaeus watches an OLD NURSEMAID STITCH the wound in Odysseus’s leg.
EUMAEUS
Why do you always pluck your bow?
ODYSSEUS
To test the tension.
Eumaeus looks at him. NOT BUYING IT.
ODYSSEUS (CONT’D)
Ouch!
The Old Nursemaid looks at him, ANNOYED.
OLD NURSEMAID
Hold still. How bad a scar do you want?
ODYSSEUS
(to Eumaeus)
It’s only fair.
EUMAEUS
To warn your prey?
ODYSSEUS
To fight with honour.
EUMAEUS
You weren’t fighting -- you were hunting.
ODYSSEUS
Hunting’s just fighting by stealth.
EUMAEUS
Clever. But your cleverness will get you in trouble.
