The Odyssey · written by Christopher Nolan · 2026
Scene 144 of 199 · ≈ 1 min on screen · Act two
Twenty years after leaving for the Trojan War, Odysseus fights his way home across a hostile sea only to find his kingdom overrun — and must return in disguise to reclaim his wife, his son, and his throne from the suitors laying siege to his house.
Ithaca frozen in a decade of waiting: Penelope weaving, the suitors feasting, Telemachus unheard.
Telemachus needs proof of his father's fate; Penelope needs the throne secured before the suitors force her hand.
Telemachus sails from Ithaca in secret, crossing into the unfamiliar world beyond his mother's house.
Odysseus's captivity with Calypso opens the parallel strand — a man who has forgotten his own family, slowly remembering his way home.
Circe begins transforming Odysseus's starving men into pigs mid-feast — the crew's appetite becomes literal cost, and Odysseus is forced to act alone.
In Calypso's cave, Odysseus admits he washed ashore alone with no idea what became of his men.
Flashback: Odysseus lies half-dead amid wreckage on Calypso's beach as she watches over him.
Flashback: Calypso nurses the unconscious Odysseus back to health with lotus, and falls in love with him as she cares for him.
This scene
Odysseus stares at Calypso. CONCERNED.
ODYSSEUS
How long have I been here?
CALYPSO
I kept telling myself to stop giving it to you. That you were strong enough to remember...
ODYSSEUS
How long, Calypso?
CALYPSO
But you were so happy.
ODYSSEUS
You were happy.
CALYPSO
We were happy. For years.
ODYSSEUS
Years?!
CALYPSO
Seven years.
Odysseus takes this in. He looks at her, QUIET...
ODYSSEUS
You fed me lotus flower and held me captive --
CALYPSO
I saved your life.
Odysseus shakes his head. LOST...
CALYPSO (CONT'D)
I rebuilt your body. But I couldn't bring myself to rebuild your mind. And you've been happy. But your heart was always elsewhere, your mind was bound to follow eventually.
ODYSSEUS
How could you?
CALYPSO
The lotus clouds the mind and saps the will -- but it doesn't change who you are. You weren't ready to go home, for whatever reason.
ODYSSEUS
I am now.
CALYPSO
As I always knew you would be.
ODYSSEUS
How?
CALYPSO
You were clutching something when I found you. Your hand didn't open for weeks...
She holds out the GOLDEN PIN OF ATHENA given to him by Penelope...
CALYPSO (CONT'D)
You used to call out in your sleep. Mostly to Athena, but sometimes you'd say another name...
Odysseus TAKES the golden pin, turns it in his fingers - REMEMBERS WITH A JOLT --
ODYSSEUS
Penelope.
Calypso nods. Odysseus reels with the FLOOD OF MEMORIES...
ODYSSEUS (CONT'D)
Help me go home.
CALYPSO
I am.
