The Odyssey · written by Christopher Nolan · 2026
Scene 32 of 199 · ≈ 1 min on screen · Act two
Twenty years after leaving for the Trojan War, Odysseus fights his way home across a hostile sea only to find his kingdom overrun — and must return in disguise to reclaim his wife, his son, and his throne from the suitors laying siege to his house.
Ithaca frozen in a decade of waiting: Penelope weaving, the suitors feasting, Telemachus unheard.
Telemachus needs proof of his father's fate; Penelope needs the throne secured before the suitors force her hand.
Telemachus sails from Ithaca in secret, crossing into the unfamiliar world beyond his mother's house.
As the ship departs Ithaca, Telemachus tells Mentor he's sailing to find his father, certain he's still alive.
On a beach, an aged, amnesiac Odysseus struggles to piece together fragmented dream-images of drowning men and a falling statue of Athena, watched by Athena herself in disguise.
In Calypso's cave, Odysseus and Calypso debate whether remembering his past would destroy the peace they've built together.
This scene
Odysseus (FORTIES, WEARY but YOUNGER, DARKER, SHORTER BEARD) stands in the dunes looking down at one FRESH GRAVE AMIDST ROWS and ROWS of them. He looks at something in his hand -- a WOODEN LOT WITH NOTCHES ON ITS SIDE. He puts the lot DEEP IN HIS BELT.
Odysseus follows Agamemnon to his ship. Behind them, above the dunes, SMOKE RISES over the SMOULDERING RUINS of the greatest city ever known. Odysseus KISSES Agamemnon.
Agamemnon's ships pull away. Odysseus approaches his men, SCATTERED amongst the dunes.
ODYSSEUS
Ten years on this fucking beach.
He looks around for better words. There aren't any.
ODYSSEUS (CONT'D)
Let's go home. Remember those we leave here.
His men, THREE SHIPS' WORTH, hardened, exhausted, filthy, NOD REVERENTLY. Several in TEARS. A Soldier, EURYLOCHUS, comes close...
EURYLOCHUS
Do we have enough provisions?
ODYSSEUS
We've taken enough from Troy. An extra stop or two won't slow us down.
