Scene 171 of 189 · ≈ 1 min on screen · Act two
Mark Zuckerberg wants status and belonging Harvard's final clubs won't give him, so he builds a website that gives the world both — and loses his best friend and co-founder to the company he built to prove he mattered.
Mark at the campus bar: brilliant, status-obsessed, unable to read the room he's sitting in.
He wants to matter — to be let into the final clubs, to be exceptional enough that Erica's verdict is wrong — and Facemash is the first proof-of-concept.
He takes the Winklevoss pitch as a springboard, builds theFacebook in its place, and launches it into a world he can't control.
Expansion to Yale, Columbia, Stanford; the move to Palo Alto; the costs mount — Eduardo sidelined, the twins circling, the company outgrowing its dorm-room shape.
Eduardo's girlfriend Christy shows up unannounced at his cramped New York sublet, confronting him over his 'single' Facebook status and unanswered texts.
On the phone with Eduardo, Mark furiously accuses him of jeopardizing the company by freezing the account, unaware Christy is setting his gift on fire behind Eduardo's back — until Mark reveals Thiel's investment and calls Eduardo back in.
Eduardo signs re-incorporation paperwork at the new Facebook office, discovering his ownership stake actually rose to 34.4% while Mark's dropped, and Christy sets his gift on fire.
This scene
It’s dusk now and the sky outside the room is turning purple. EDUARDO seems lost in thought.
GRETCHEN

Eduardo?
EDUARDO looks up.
EDUARDO
(pause)
Could you please repeat the question?
SY
No. It was an outrageously leading
question the first time around and now
you want us to hear it again?
GRETCHEN
Yes, would you read it back, please.
SY
Well, go ahead.
COURT REPORTER
Counsel: “And when you signed these
documents, were you aware that you were
signing your own death certificate?”
EDUARDO
(pause)
No.
(pause)
It was insanely stupid of me not to have
my own lawyers look over all the...the,
uh...in all honesty I thought they were
my lawyers.
(then to MARK)
I was your only friend. You had one
friend.
(beat)
My father won’t even look at me.
GRETCHEN
(beat)
Okay. Eduardo? Did Mr. Zuckerberg say
anything to you after you signed the
papers?
EDUARDO
There was a lot of handshaking and a lot
of congratulations. He’d already told me
that he wouldn’t be coming back to school
for at least a semester so we were saying
goodbye for a while. And then before I
left, he said--
