Scene 58 of 189 · ≈ 1 min on screen
Mark Zuckerberg wants status and belonging Harvard's final clubs won't give him, so he builds a website that gives the world both — and loses his best friend and co-founder to the company he built to prove he mattered.
Mark at the campus bar: brilliant, status-obsessed, unable to read the room he's sitting in.
He wants to matter — to be let into the final clubs, to be exceptional enough that Erica's verdict is wrong — and Facemash is the first proof-of-concept.
Cameron, Tyler, and Divya recruit Mark to build HarvardConnection — the idea that becomes Facebook arrives from outside him.
Gage presses Mark on whether he'd agreed to build HarvardConnection; Mark says he only agreed to help.
Gretchen asks Eduardo when Mark approached him with the idea, and Eduardo places it at an Alpha Epsilon Pi Caribbean Night party.
At the lackluster Jewish-fraternity Caribbean party, Eduardo reveals he's been punched by the Phoenix before Mark pulls him outside to pitch a new idea.

EDUARDO
Yeah.
MARK
It was because they saw pictures of girls
that they knew. People want to go on the
internet and check out their friends. Why
not build a website that offers that?
Friends, pictures, profiles, whatever you
can...visit, browse around, maybe it’s
somebody you just met at a party. I’m not
talking about a dating site. I’m talking
about taking the entire social experience
of college and putting it online.
EDUARDO
I can’t feel my legs.
MARK
I know, I’m totally psyched about this,
too. But Wardo--
