Scene 67 of 189 · ≈ 1 min on screen
Mark Zuckerberg wants status and belonging Harvard's final clubs won't give him, so he builds a website that gives the world both — and loses his best friend and co-founder to the company he built to prove he mattered.
Mark at the campus bar: brilliant, status-obsessed, unable to read the room he's sitting in.
He wants to matter — to be let into the final clubs, to be exceptional enough that Erica's verdict is wrong — and Facemash is the first proof-of-concept.
Cameron, Tyler, and Divya recruit Mark to build HarvardConnection — the idea that becomes Facebook arrives from outside him.
Mark proposes splitting ownership 70-30, with Eduardo as CFO for putting up the thousand dollars.
Eduardo confirms in deposition that he agreed to the arrangement on the spot.
Mark dismisses Eduardo's Phoenix punch as a diversity move, unbothered.

GRETCHEN
Why do you think he said that?
SY
Gretchen, excuse me for interrupting but
whose discovery is this?
GRETCHEN
Sy, if you’ll let me continue with my
line of questioning--
SY
What are you suggesting?
MARK
They’re suggesting I was jealous of
Eduardo for getting punched by the
Phoenix and began a plan to screw him out
of a company I hadn’t even invented yet.
GRETCHEN
Were you?
SY
Gretchen--
MARK
Jealous of Eduardo?
SY
Stop typing, we’re off the record.
MARK
Ma’am, I know you’ve done your homework
and so you know that money isn’t a big
part of my life, but at the moment I
could buy Mount Auburn Street, take the
Phoenix Club and turn it into my ping
pong room.
