Scene 90 of 189 · ≈ 1 min on screen
Mark Zuckerberg wants status and belonging Harvard's final clubs won't give him, so he builds a website that gives the world both — and loses his best friend and co-founder to the company he built to prove he mattered.
Mark at the campus bar: brilliant, status-obsessed, unable to read the room he's sitting in.
He wants to matter — to be let into the final clubs, to be exceptional enough that Erica's verdict is wrong — and Facemash is the first proof-of-concept.
Cameron, Tyler, and Divya recruit Mark to build HarvardConnection — the idea that becomes Facebook arrives from outside him.
Eduardo confirms to Gage that, to his knowledge, Mark had never actually begun work on HarvardConnection.
Cameron reads an e-mail from Mark expressing doubts about HarvardConnection's ability to draw critical mass.
Divya accuses Mark outright of stealing their idea in deposition, and Mark needles him back by asking if he can see any of his own code on Facebook.
This scene
MARK is working at a station. We can see through the windows that it’s a frigid, snowy February day in Cambridge but MARK’s in his hoodie and cargo shorts nonetheless. It looks like he hasn’t slept in days. On his monitor we can see that he’s working on the profile page for theFacebook.
DUSTIN MOSKOVITZ steps up to him quietly.
DUSTIN
Mark?
(pause)
Mark.
MARK turns his head and looks at him...
DUSTIN (CONT’D)
(quietly)
There’s a girl in your art history class.
Her name is Stephanie Attis. Do you
happen to know if she has a boyfriend?
MARK just keeps looking at him--barely even blinking--”Why am I being interrupted?”
DUSTIN (CONT’D)
(beat)
Have you ever seen her with anyone?
(beat)
And if not, do you happen to know if
she’s looking to go out with anyone?
MARK
(pause)
Dustin. People don’t walk around with a
sign on them that says--
And MARK stops short right there. Because in his head, he’s just discovered the cure for cancer.
DUSTIN
(pause)
Mark?
