Mark Zuckerberg wants status and belonging Harvard's final clubs won't give him, so he builds a website that gives the world both — and loses his best friend and co-founder to the company he built to prove he mattered.
Mark at the campus bar: brilliant, status-obsessed, unable to read the room he's sitting in.
He wants to matter — to be let into the final clubs, to be exceptional enough that Erica's verdict is wrong — and Facemash is the first proof-of-concept.
He takes the Winklevoss pitch as a springboard, builds theFacebook in its place, and launches it into a world he can't control.
Mark shows Eduardo the finished theFacebook homepage, adds a Relationship Status field on the spot, and the two of them e-mail the launch link to the Phoenix listserv, putting the site live.
At a Krokodiloes concert, Divya's girlfriend K.C. gets the theFacebook link spammed to her, and Divya's reaction on reading it sends him bolting from the hall.
Divya sprints across the Charles River in the cold, laptop and Crimson in hand.

CAMERON and TYLER are rowing in a large practice tank--a simulator with a hull, oars and rowable water.
They’re focused and charging away in perfect sync when the door at the end of the century-old boathouse opens and DIVYA charges in from the cold with his laptop and a copy of the Crimson in his hands.
DIVYA
(calling)
Hey!
The twins are in the zone and don’t pay any attention.
DIVYA (CONT’D)
(louder)
Hey!
CAMERON
Not now, we need 20 minutes.
DIVYA
(calmly)
Okay. I just wanted to let you know
Zuckerberg stole our website.
TYLER stops rowing and then CAMERON. They look at DIVYA...

Mark Zuckerberg stole our website. It’s
been live for more than 36 hours.
