Obsession · written by Curry Barker · 2026
Scene 60 of 61 · ≈ 2 min on screen · Act three
Bear wishes the woman he loves would love him back. The wish comes true — and her devotion becomes a violence neither of them can stop.
Bear in his comfort zone of quiet, unspoken longing for Nicky, grieving his cat and coached by Ian to stay silent rather than confess.
Bear needs Nicky to love him back, sharpened by trivia night's proximity to her and Ian, and the purchase of the willow as an almost-joke wish object.
Bear breaks the willow and makes the wish, crossing from wanting to actively, magically pursuing Nicky's love.
Bear adapts to Nicky's escalating strangeness, paying the cost of denial and rationalization as the relationship forms under increasingly disturbing terms.
Nicky confesses her love and the relationship becomes real — Bear gets exactly what he wished for, at the exact moment the cracks (the dad lie) start to show.
The price escalates from self-harm and terror to Sarah's murder, the heaviest cost of the wish coming due.
Bear returns to the world he knew — the crystal shop, Ian's house, his own living room — trying and failing to undo the wish, confronted at every turn with what he's caused.
Bear walks away from Ian's house as money keeps falling through the open door.
Bear approaches his own house, Willows in hand, wary of the empty driveway.
Bear finds his house turned into a shrine to their relationship with Sarah's corpse propped in a chair; when he whispers a wish for Nicky not to love him, she appears wearing Sarah's copied tattoos, shoots Ian dead, threatens suicide, and forces Bear to scream he loves her.
This scene
He quickly shuts the bathroom door behind him, locking Nicky out.
NICKY (O.S.)
NO. Fuck you, Bear. Let me in!
BEAR
I'll only be a second!
Nicky hammers on the door, relentless and fierce. Bear slumps over the sink, a picture of defeat, staring down.
BEAR (CONT'D)
Babe! Just give me a second to freshen up. I'm embarrassed.
Nicky stops.
NICKY (O.S.)
Okay, just a second.
Bear lacks the energy to cry. He stares at his reflection; a stranger. Digging into his pocket, he retrieves Nicky's tiger's eye, gripping it as guilt engulfs him.
A second reach finds Nicky's gun. He points it at his chest, pondering the pain. His fingers search for bone; something feels wrong.
He lowers the weapon, yet despair remains. He places it in his mouth, checking his aim by touching the back of his head, then tilts the gun upward, aiming for the brain.
NO.
He places the gun on the cabinet, eyes the door, then, with a thought, slips it back into his pocket—just in case.
He glances at his reflection, opens the medicine cabinet, and grabs the pills. He swallows as many as he can, then one more for good measure. Sitting on the toilet, he realizes there's no turning back.
Suddenly, a spark ignites within him, the world snapping into focus. It's as if a SPELL has been cast. His eyes widen, and he rises from the toilet, staring at the bathroom door with fierce determination, desperate to reach something beyond it.
