Scene 61 of 61 · ≈ 1 min on screen · Last scene of act three
Bear wishes the woman he loves would love him back. The wish comes true — and her devotion becomes a violence neither of them can stop.
Bear in his comfort zone of quiet, unspoken longing for Nicky, grieving his cat and coached by Ian to stay silent rather than confess.
Bear needs Nicky to love him back, sharpened by trivia night's proximity to her and Ian, and the purchase of the willow as an almost-joke wish object.
Bear breaks the willow and makes the wish, crossing from wanting to actively, magically pursuing Nicky's love.
Bear adapts to Nicky's escalating strangeness, paying the cost of denial and rationalization as the relationship forms under increasingly disturbing terms.
Nicky confesses her love and the relationship becomes real — Bear gets exactly what he wished for, at the exact moment the cracks (the dad lie) start to show.
The price escalates from self-harm and terror to Sarah's murder, the heaviest cost of the wish coming due.
Bear returns to the world he knew — the crystal shop, Ian's house, his own living room — trying and failing to undo the wish, confronted at every turn with what he's caused.
Bear approaches his own house, Willows in hand, wary of the empty driveway.
Bear finds his house turned into a shrine to their relationship with Sarah's corpse propped in a chair; when he whispers a wish for Nicky not to love him, she appears wearing Sarah's copied tattoos, shoots Ian dead, threatens suicide, and forces Bear to scream he loves her.
Locked in the bathroom with Nicky pounding on the door, Bear points her gun at himself, can't go through with it, then swallows a handful of pills instead before a strange surge of resolve pulls him back to his feet.
This scene
Bear slowly walks out into the hallway with vigor and desperation. He sees Nicky from across the house smiling at him. He smiles back. They laugh together.
It's a total "Rom-Com" moment... minus the blood, wounds, and terrifying undertones.
He slowly approaches and she extends her arms like a child. He leans in and kisses her. A longing for togetherness. His face becomes covered in blood as he kisses her broken jaw.
We slowly pan over to reveal, on the table, a freshly used ONE WISH WILLOW. We can tell by its placement that NICKY used it. Bear collapses onto the couch.
NICKY
No, no, no, no.
(whispers)
What did you do? Bear?
Music starts to play, offering a creepy optimistic feel in juxtaposition to the terror in front of us. Nicky, now clutching Bear's lifeless form, cradles him with profound sorrow.
NICKY (CONT'D)
(whispers)
Bear no! No no no no no no no!
What did you do? Baby no!
BEAR
(weak)
In this life and the next.
These final words hit Nicky. She takes Bear's gun and, with finality, shoots herself in the head. We remain fixed on this shot, capturing the blood slowly dripping, a haunting and somber testament to this tragic love story.
