Scene 12 of 110 · ≈ 1 min on screen · Act one
In 1932 Mississippi, gifted sharecropper-bluesman Sammie Moore wants to make a life in the blues beyond his preacher father's rules, but the opening night of his cousins' juke joint becomes a siege by a vampire offering the community belonging at the price of its freedom.
A match illuminates woodcuts of musicians summoning the dead, then a red-eyed figure appears at the window.
Sammie finishes his cotton quota early and looks forward to playing blues that night.
Sammie greets his mother Ruthie and discovers that his guitar and slide are missing.
Sammie searches the family shack for the guitar he needs for the night's music.
This scene
Sammie exits with a pace, walking towards RUTHIE.
SAMMIE
Ma, my guitar and my slide ain’t
in there. Now I don’t suppose they
grew legs and walked out.
Ruthie gives Sammie a knowing glance. He knows what this means.
