Scene 9 of 110 · ≈ 1 min on screen · Act one
In 1932 Mississippi, gifted sharecropper-bluesman Sammie Moore wants to make a life in the blues beyond his preacher father's rules, but the opening night of his cousins' juke joint becomes a siege by a vampire offering the community belonging at the price of its freedom.
A match illuminates woodcuts of musicians summoning the dead, then a red-eyed figure appears at the window.
The stranger reveals himself as a vampire after killing Bert, leaving Joan trapped with the thing he has become.
Smoke and Stack meet Hogwood at an abandoned mill and confirm their plan to buy it.
The twins pay for the mill, equipment, and land, then threaten Hogwood to keep their return secret.
This scene
SAMMIE (19, BLACK) A SHARECROPPER works barefoot in a cotton field, the morning sun is still low in the sky. He hums a tune to himself, (I LIED TO YOU).
He’s been at it for hours, evidenced by the full 9 ft sack beside him. Other SHARECROPPERS begin to show to start their day.
SHARECROPPER
You out early this fine Saturday
morning. I take it you strummin’
that guitar tonight?
Sammie smiles.
SHARECROPPER (CONT’D)
You gonna tell me where you
playin’ or am I gonna have to hear
it through the grapevine?
Sammie packs up the massive bag of cotton.
SAMMIE
You have a good one Beatrice. And
I’ll see you at service tomorrow
mornin’.
SHARECROPPER
I guess the grapevine it is.
Sammie walks with hi s cotton sack over his back towards a SHACK in the distance.
