Scene 8 of 110 · ≈ 2 min on screen · Act one
In 1932 Mississippi, gifted sharecropper-bluesman Sammie Moore wants to make a life in the blues beyond his preacher father's rules, but the opening night of his cousins' juke joint becomes a siege by a vampire offering the community belonging at the price of its freedom.
A match illuminates woodcuts of musicians summoning the dead, then a red-eyed figure appears at the window.
Joan lies to Chayton, sends the search party away, and returns inside as darkness gathers.
The stranger reveals himself as a vampire after killing Bert, leaving Joan trapped with the thing he has become.
Smoke and Stack meet Hogwood at an abandoned mill and confirm their plan to buy it.
This scene
Stack walks around examining the room beside Hogwood. Smoke eyes Hogwood from upstairs.
HOGWOOD
They moved a ton of timber a month
back in its heyday. Workers lived
upstairs.
Smoke sees something on the ground and bends down, running his fingers along the wood. Stack notices.
STACK
You washed these floors?
HOGWOOD
Yeah.
SMOKE
What was on them?
HOGWOOD
I thought ya’ll was dead set on
buying the place. Th e longer time
I spend with ya’ll, the less sure
I am you boys was serious about
it.
SMOKE
Ain’t no boys here.
STACK
Just grown men wit grown men
money.
SMOKE
And grown men bullets.
HOGWOOD
I ain’t mean nothin by it. Just
the way we talk down here.
A long beat.
SMOKE
We’ll take it.
Hogwood’s eyebrows raise.
SMOKE (CONT’D)
The Mill, the equipment, and the
land it stands on.
Stack hands Hogwood a bag. He thumbs through it for a beat then looks up, inquisitive.
HOGWOOD
Whats the extra for?
STACK
For your Klan buddies.
HOGWOOD
Klan don’t exist no more.
SMOKE
Then you take it to your clubhouse
then.
STACK
And if anybody from Chicago come
asking, make sure ya’ll tell em
ya’ll sold us this place years
Hogwood nods.
HOGWOOD
Secrets safe with me.
SMOKE
Understand if you take t hat money,
that’s the last dime you get from
us. If we see you or one of your
friends cross that property line,
we’ll kill em where they stand.
HOGWOOD
Pleasure doing business with you
both.
Hogwood heads towards the door. He stops.
HOGWOOD (CONT’D)
What do ya’ll fellas plan on doing
with the place?
