Scene 55 of 110 · ≈ 1 min on screen · Act one
In 1932 Mississippi, gifted sharecropper-bluesman Sammie Moore wants to make a life in the blues beyond his preacher father's rules, but the opening night of his cousins' juke joint becomes a siege by a vampire offering the community belonging at the price of its freedom.
The legend and prologue frame Sammie's segregated Delta life under his father's church and the twins' shadow.
Sammie wants the freedom, recognition, and musical life he imagines beyond the plantation.
He leaves the plantation with the twins, enters the wider Delta, and helps build their juke joint.
Smoke orders Sammie to play, and the first wave of patrons begins to fill the room.
Cornbread admits more local patrons as the juke's opening crowd grows outside.
Delta Slim takes the stage and starts the night's blues performance.
This scene
Sammie brings Cornbread a beer. Pearline enters following another guitarist.
SAMMIE
You made it.
PEARLINE
Yeah. When they turn this place
into a Juke?
SAMMIE
Today. My cousins own it. You know
the Twins?
PEARLINE
Heard of em of course. They your
cousins?
Sammie nods. Ready to soak up any trickle down respect.
PEARLINE (CONT’D)
Ya’ll must be play cousins.
SAMMIE
They daddy was my daddy’s big
brother.
Pearline p auses.
PEARLINE
So ya’ll cousins through blood?
You seem like such a nice young
man.
SAMMIE
I’m not always nice. And I ain’t
that young.
