Spotlight · written by Josh Singer & Tom McCarthy · 2015
Scene 9 of 143 · ≈ 1 min on screen · Act one
The Boston Globe's Spotlight team pries open the Catholic Church's decades-long cover-up of child abuse — one sealed record, one silenced victim at a time.
1976: a police station quietly disappears a molestation case against Father Geoghan, a Bishop, and a hushed young cop watching it happen.
Mike Rezendes badgers a DOJ source over the police-numbers story while Robby overhears the team dismiss it as thin, not really a Spotlight story.
Robby meets incoming editor Marty Baron for the first time over lunch and briefs him on how Spotlight works, sensing Marty is quietly sizing up the team.
Ben tells Robby that Baron was unreadable in their own sit-down, as the two head into Marty's first editorial meeting.
This scene
Editors around a horseshoe table, side seats filled. It’s QUIET, nervous eyes on Marty, who reads some notes. Ben and editor HELEN DONOVAN, 50s, to either side. Robby sits off to the side, WATCHING.
HELEN DONOVAN
Morning everyone. Let’s get started.
Do you want to say something, Marty?
MARTY
Uh, sure.
(to the group)
Hello. As most of you know by now,
my name is Marty Baron, I’m
delighted to be here. If you can
tell me your name as we go around,
that would be helpful.
Marty looks back to his notes.
HELEN DONONVAN
Okay. Peter?
Ben nods to METRO EDITOR PETER CANELLOS, 40s.
CANELLOS
Peter Canellos, Metro. We’ve got a
major Big Dig closure that’s just
been scheduled for early August...
Marty makes notes. Off Ben and Robby, trading a look.
