Tenet · written by Christopher Nolan · 2020
Scene 111 of 275 · ≈ 1 min on screen · Act two
An unnamed intelligence operative, recruited into a shadow war fought through time-inverted weapons and objects, teams with an enigmatic ally to stop a dying Russian oligarch from using technology gifted by a dying future to erase the present.
The Protagonist in his zone of comfort — a skilled, anonymous field operative, competent and confident inside the Kiev operation.
Broken by torture and 'killed,' he needs a new purpose; Fay offers one that transcends the nation-state loyalties that just got his team killed.
He enters the wholly unfamiliar situation of Tenet — the wind turbine, the password test, and Barbara's proof that time itself can run backward.
The Protagonist begins surveilling Kat at her son's school gates — he commits to using her marriage against Sator, entering the upside-down world of the operation proper.
Kat's appraisal-room scene with the forged Goya begins the relationship — with Kat, and by extension her son Max — that will carry the story's theme of what a parent will do to save a child.
Neil confirms the heist crew escaped clean; the Protagonist reveals a 'temporal cold war' and fully recruits Neil.
Priya explains the reversed round the Protagonist recovered came from a 'turnstile' Sator was given by the future.
Priya reveals the real mission: help Sator seem to steal the last loose plutonium sample without losing control of it, because 'we're being attacked by the future.'
This scene
The Protagonist leaves the tourists behind, heading down a leafy path to emerge at a terrace overlooking the sea. Kat stands there, alone. The Protagonist falls in beside her.
KAT
I saw the news from Oslo. Do you
have the drawing?
PROTAGONIST
You don’t have to worry about it
any more.
KAT
You destroyed it?
PROTAGONIST
I didn’t think you’d want it back.
KAT
Does he know?
PROTAGONIST
Not yet, so sit tight.
KAT
Sit tight? Why? Every day my son
spends with that monster, he thinks
a little less of me.
PROTAGONIST
It won’t be long. In the meantime,
introduce me.
KAT
As what?
PROTAGONIST
I’m a former First Secretary from
the American Embassy in Riyadh, we
met at a party last June –
KAT
We were at a party in Riyadh, but I
don’t think it was June –
PROTAGONIST
June 29th. 7 for 7:30, salmon on
the printed menu swapped for sea
bass on the night. Sator left
early, that’s when we met. Don’t
offer any of this, it’s there if he
asks. I came into Shipley’s in
London, you ran into me here and
want to show me the yacht.
KAT
He’ll think we’re having an affair.
PROTAGONIST
And he’ll want to meet me.
KAT
Or have you killed.
PROTAGONIST
Let me worry about that.
KAT
Did I look worried?
