Tenet · written by Christopher Nolan · 2020
Scene 116 of 275 · ≈ 1 min on screen · Act two
An unnamed intelligence operative, recruited into a shadow war fought through time-inverted weapons and objects, teams with an enigmatic ally to stop a dying Russian oligarch from using technology gifted by a dying future to erase the present.
The Protagonist in his zone of comfort — a skilled, anonymous field operative, competent and confident inside the Kiev operation.
Broken by torture and 'killed,' he needs a new purpose; Fay offers one that transcends the nation-state loyalties that just got his team killed.
He enters the wholly unfamiliar situation of Tenet — the wind turbine, the password test, and Barbara's proof that time itself can run backward.
The Protagonist begins surveilling Kat at her son's school gates — he commits to using her marriage against Sator, entering the upside-down world of the operation proper.
Kat's appraisal-room scene with the forged Goya begins the relationship — with Kat, and by extension her son Max — that will carry the story's theme of what a parent will do to save a child.
The Protagonist re-approaches Kat at Amalfi to use her as his entry to Sator, formally locking him into the Sator operation rather than working it from the outside.
The Protagonist speeds Kat over to the yacht by boat, drawing Sator's notice.
Sator confronts Kat about the American stranger she brought aboard.
Sator menaces the Protagonist over dinner until the mention of opera intrigues him and wins an invitation.
This scene
Kat enters, dressed in sailing gear. Sator is already seated, similarly dressed, reading his phone, with a cup of coffee.
KAT
Max has missed too much school this
year. I’m taking him back to
England.
SATOR
No, you’re not. He has a tutor
here.
KAT
The school won’t be okay with –
SATOR
Yes, they will.
KAT
Can I finish?!
SATOR
Look around you – he has everything
he needs here.
A SERVANT places a plate with a silver cover in front of Kat, then pours her coffee.
KAT
You don’t care what he needs. You
bought the trappings of a king, but
we both know you’re a grubby little
man playing power games with a wife
who doesn’t love him any more.
Sator looks at her.
SATOR
You seem spirited today.
KAT
(defiant)
Do I?
Sator barely nods at the servant, who pulls off the lid...
SATOR
Yes. You do.
On the plate, instead of breakfast, is a small drawing. A ‘Rubens’. Kat freezes.
SATOR (CONT'D)
Were you worried it had been
destroyed? Rest assured, instinct
told me to remove it from the
vault. I’ve always had instincts
about the future. That’s how I
built this life you no longer
value.
Kat looks up at him, not knowing what to say or do.
