Tenet · written by Christopher Nolan · 2020
Scene 121 of 275 · ≈ 1 min on screen · Act two
An unnamed intelligence operative, recruited into a shadow war fought through time-inverted weapons and objects, teams with an enigmatic ally to stop a dying Russian oligarch from using technology gifted by a dying future to erase the present.
The Protagonist in his zone of comfort — a skilled, anonymous field operative, competent and confident inside the Kiev operation.
Broken by torture and 'killed,' he needs a new purpose; Fay offers one that transcends the nation-state loyalties that just got his team killed.
He enters the wholly unfamiliar situation of Tenet — the wind turbine, the password test, and Barbara's proof that time itself can run backward.
The Protagonist begins surveilling Kat at her son's school gates — he commits to using her marriage against Sator, entering the upside-down world of the operation proper.
Kat's appraisal-room scene with the forged Goya begins the relationship — with Kat, and by extension her son Max — that will carry the story's theme of what a parent will do to save a child.
The Protagonist re-approaches Kat at Amalfi to use her as his entry to Sator, formally locking him into the Sator operation rather than working it from the outside.
Sator hands the Protagonist sailing gear for a race against Kat at the helm.
Kat is named 'captain' of the sailing race.
Mid-race, the Protagonist probes Sator about the missing plutonium as Kat deliberately releases his harness, pitching him overboard.
This scene
The Protagonist dries himself – the door opens – Kat BURSTS in –
KAT
WHY DIDN’T YOU LET HIM DROWN?!
She is on him, smashing her fists into his chest –
PROTAGONIST
I need him.
KAT
To sell guns?!
PROTAGONIST
I’m not who you think I am.
KAT
That, I know – he showed me the
drawing.
PROTAGONIST
I’m sorry.
KAT
Do you have any idea what you’ve
done?
PROTAGONIST
I had to get close to him. I don’t
know what you think your husband is
–
KAT
We both know he’s an arms dealer.
PROTAGONIST
He’s so much more.
KAT
What, then?
PROTAGONIST
Andrei Sator holds all our lives in
his hands. Not just yours.
She looks bemused. A KNOCK at the door – she hides behind it –
VOLKOV
Mr Sator wants to see you.
The Protagonist nods – pushes the door – Volkov stops it –
VOLKOV (CONT'D)
Now.
PROTAGONIST
He wants to see me without pants?
Volkov lets the door shut. The Protagonist turns to Kat –
PROTAGONIST (CONT'D)
Trust me.
KAT
Save it. I’m not falling for it
twice.
The Protagonist looks at Kat. Sighs.
PROTAGONIST
You have a better option?
She looks into the Protagonist’s eyes. Assessing.
KAT
Whatever it takes to get what you
thought about me. My son. What do
you think he’s going to do to me
now?
He pulls a gun from his bag. Offers it to her.
PROTAGONIST
Try not to use this –
She takes it – lets it point at him.
PROTAGONIST (CONT'D)
On anyone.
