Scene 110 of 189 · ≈ 1 min on screen · Act two
Mark Zuckerberg wants status and belonging Harvard's final clubs won't give him, so he builds a website that gives the world both — and loses his best friend and co-founder to the company he built to prove he mattered.
Mark at the campus bar: brilliant, status-obsessed, unable to read the room he's sitting in.
He wants to matter — to be let into the final clubs, to be exceptional enough that Erica's verdict is wrong — and Facemash is the first proof-of-concept.
He takes the Winklevoss pitch as a springboard, builds theFacebook in its place, and launches it into a world he can't control.
Mark, still preoccupied, finally gets from Eduardo the names of the girls from the lecture: Christy and Alice.
In a club bathroom stall, Eduardo hooks up with Christy while, in the next stall, he clocks Mark's flip-flops doing the same with someone else.
Standing guard outside the men's room, Mark spots Erica at a booth and awkwardly tries to tell her about theFacebook, but she rebuffs him over his old blog post and wishes him luck with his 'video game.'
This scene
The door closes behind DUSTIN MOSKOVITZ and CHRIS HUGHES. MARK and EDUARDO are waiting and CHRISTY and ALICE are sitting on the couch. Everyone’s got a beer.
Once the door is closed--
MARK
We’re expanding to Yale and Columbia.
Dustin, I want you to share the coding
work with me. Chris, you’re going to be
in charge of publicity and outreach and
you can start by getting a story in the
B.U. student newspaper. The Bridge.
CHRIS
They hate doing stories about Harvard.
MARK
Somebody at the newspaper will be a
computer science major. Tell ‘em Mark
Zuckerberg will do 10 hours of free
programming.
EDUARDO
Why do you want a story in the B.U. newsp--
MARK
Because I do. Here’s the arrangement.
Eduardo is CFO and owns 30% of the
company. Dustin is Vice President and
Head of Programming and his 5% of the
company will come from my end. Chris is
Director of Publicity and his
compensation will depend on the amount of
work he ends up doing. Any questions?
DUSTIN
Who are the girls?
EDUARDO
Christy and Alice.
DUSTIN
Hi.
CHRISTY
Hi.
ALICE
Hello.
CHRIS
Hi.
CHRISTY
Is there anything we can do?
MARK
No. That’s it. Yale and Columbia, let’s
go.
EDUARDO
And Stanford.
MARK
What?
EDUARDO
in Palo Alto.
