Scene 111 of 189 · ≈ 1 min on screen · Act two
Mark Zuckerberg wants status and belonging Harvard's final clubs won't give him, so he builds a website that gives the world both — and loses his best friend and co-founder to the company he built to prove he mattered.
Mark at the campus bar: brilliant, status-obsessed, unable to read the room he's sitting in.
He wants to matter — to be let into the final clubs, to be exceptional enough that Erica's verdict is wrong — and Facemash is the first proof-of-concept.
He takes the Winklevoss pitch as a springboard, builds theFacebook in its place, and launches it into a world he can't control.
In a club bathroom stall, Eduardo hooks up with Christy while, in the next stall, he clocks Mark's flip-flops doing the same with someone else.
Standing guard outside the men's room, Mark spots Erica at a booth and awkwardly tries to tell her about theFacebook, but she rebuffs him over his old blog post and wishes him luck with his 'video game.'
Mark lays out Facebook's expansion to Yale, Columbia and Stanford and assigns roles to Dustin and Chris, while Eduardo pushes to add Stanford too.
This scene
MARK is sitting alone in the now empty room. There’s a computer on a table in the corner and MARK makes a few keystrokes and then reads the screen.
MARYLIN, the young lawyer we met early on, comes in with a plastic salad container in her hand and sits at the far end of the table from MARK, who doesn’t acknowledge her.
MARYLIN
(after a moment)
You don’t want any lunch?
MARK
(beat)
No.
MARYLIN
You’re welcome to some salad.
MARK
No thank you.
MARYLIN
This must be hard.
MARK
Who are you?
MARYLIN
I’m Marylin Delpy, I introduced myself--
MARK
I mean what do you do?
MARYLIN
I’m a second year associate at the firm.
My boss wanted me to sit in on the
deposition phase.
MARK nods...
MARYLIN (CONT’D)
What are you doing?
MARK
Checking in to see how it’s going in
Bosnia.
MARYLIN
Bosnia?
MARK nods...
MARYLIN (CONT’D)
They don’t have roads but they have
Facebook?
MARK nods...
MARYLIN (CONT’D)
You must really hate the Winklevoss’s.
MARK
I don’t hate anybody.
(pause)
The Winklevi aren’t suing me for
intellectual property theft. They’re
suing me because for the first time in
their lives, things didn’t work out the
way they were supposed to for them.
