Scene 117 of 189 · ≈ 1 min on screen · Act two
Mark Zuckerberg wants status and belonging Harvard's final clubs won't give him, so he builds a website that gives the world both — and loses his best friend and co-founder to the company he built to prove he mattered.
Mark at the campus bar: brilliant, status-obsessed, unable to read the room he's sitting in.
He wants to matter — to be let into the final clubs, to be exceptional enough that Erica's verdict is wrong — and Facemash is the first proof-of-concept.
He takes the Winklevoss pitch as a springboard, builds theFacebook in its place, and launches it into a world he can't control.
Cameron and Tyler wait in Larry Summers' outer office, sized up by his unimpressed secretary.
Summers dismisses Cameron and Tyler's plea for university intervention against Mark, telling them this isn't a university matter and to go invent something else.
Tyler breaks the 335-year-old doorknob storming out of Summers' office.

GRETCHEN
Eduardo, spring break, you and Mr.
Zuckerberg took a trip to New York.
EDUARDO
Yes.
GRETCHEN
What was the purpose of the trip?
EDUARDO
As CFO, I’d set up some meetings with
potential advertisers.
GRETCHEN
Who paid for the trip?
EDUARDO
It was paid for out of the thousand
dollar account I’d set up a few months
earlier.
GRETCHEN
At this point your thousand dollars was
the only money that had been put into the
company.
EDUARDO
Yes.
GRETCHEN
How did you feel the meetings went?
EDUARDO
They went terribly.
GRETCHEN
Why?
EDUARDO
Mark was asleep.
MARK
I wasn’t asleep.
EDUARDO
Can I re-phrase my answer?
GRETCHEN
Sure.
EDUARDO
I wish he’d been asleep.
