Scene 118 of 189 · ≈ 1 min on screen · Act two
Mark Zuckerberg wants status and belonging Harvard's final clubs won't give him, so he builds a website that gives the world both — and loses his best friend and co-founder to the company he built to prove he mattered.
Mark at the campus bar: brilliant, status-obsessed, unable to read the room he's sitting in.
He wants to matter — to be let into the final clubs, to be exceptional enough that Erica's verdict is wrong — and Facemash is the first proof-of-concept.
He takes the Winklevoss pitch as a springboard, builds theFacebook in its place, and launches it into a world he can't control.
Summers dismisses Cameron and Tyler's plea for university intervention against Mark, telling them this isn't a university matter and to go invent something else.
Tyler breaks the 335-year-old doorknob storming out of Summers' office.
In deposition, Eduardo recalls a spring-break trip to New York to pitch advertisers, which went terribly because Mark fell asleep in the meetings.
This scene
EDUARDO, in a three-piece suit, is pitching the EXECUTIVE. MARK, in his hoodie and flip-flops, is completely detached and staring at the floor.
EDUARDO
...and we’re at 29 schools now with over
75,000 members. People who go on
theFacebook tend to stay on longer than
almost any other site, now here’s the
most impressive statistic--91% of people
who try it once will come back. Now if
you’ll allow me--
EXECUTIVE
Excuse me one second.
(re: MARK)
What sound is he making? Is that like a
“tsk”.
MARK
It wasn’t a “tsk”, it was uh...hmm...like
a glottal stop. Almost a gag reflex.
EXECUTIVE
(beat)
Guys, what is this?
