Scene 134 of 189 · ≈ 1 min on screen · Act two
Mark Zuckerberg wants status and belonging Harvard's final clubs won't give him, so he builds a website that gives the world both — and loses his best friend and co-founder to the company he built to prove he mattered.
Mark at the campus bar: brilliant, status-obsessed, unable to read the room he's sitting in.
He wants to matter — to be let into the final clubs, to be exceptional enough that Erica's verdict is wrong — and Facemash is the first proof-of-concept.
He takes the Winklevoss pitch as a springboard, builds theFacebook in its place, and launches it into a world he can't control.
Sean Parker enters at the 66 dinner and becomes the relationship — equal parts mentor and corrupter — that carries the story's real theme about loyalty and ambition.
Eduardo's voiceover recalls Sean spinning Silicon Valley stories that all circled back to convincing Mark to move to California.
Sean corrects Eduardo's growth pitch with the 'Little Big Horn' expansion strategy credited to Mark, then argues against selling out to advertising too soon.
Eduardo tells the deposition room that Sean's talk of a billion-dollar valuation silenced everyone at the table.

SEAN
And that’s where you’re headed. A billion
dollar valuation. Unless you take bad
advice in which case you may as well have
come up with a chain of very successful
yogurt shops. When you go fishing you can
catch a lot of fish or you can catch a
big fish. You ever walk into a guy’s den
and see a picture of him standing next to
fourteen trout?
CHRISTY
No, he’s holding a 3000 pound marlin.
SEAN
Yep.
MARK
That’s a good analogy.
EDUARDO
Okay, but we all know that marlins don’t
really weigh 3000 pounds, right?
CHRISTY
Have you seen the big ones up close?
EDUARDO
I haven’t but I don’t think the guy’s
holding a marlin the size of a Range
Rover. That would be a really big fish
and a very strong guy.
CHRISTY
You think we might be getting away from
the point?
SEAN
I don’t have a dog in this fight. I’m
just a fan who came to say hi.
