Scene 138 of 189 · ≈ 1 min on screen · Act two
Mark Zuckerberg wants status and belonging Harvard's final clubs won't give him, so he builds a website that gives the world both — and loses his best friend and co-founder to the company he built to prove he mattered.
Mark at the campus bar: brilliant, status-obsessed, unable to read the room he's sitting in.
He wants to matter — to be let into the final clubs, to be exceptional enough that Erica's verdict is wrong — and Facemash is the first proof-of-concept.
He takes the Winklevoss pitch as a springboard, builds theFacebook in its place, and launches it into a world he can't control.
Sean Parker enters at the 66 dinner and becomes the relationship — equal parts mentor and corrupter — that carries the story's real theme about loyalty and ambition.
The dinner at 66 with Sean Parker — "a billion dollars, that's cool" — reframes the company's ambition and pulls Mark irreversibly toward Sean's orbit.
Eduardo tells the lawyers Sean owned Mark after that dinner.
Sean picks up the check and, as his parting gift, tells Mark to drop the 'the' from theFacebook.
In the cab home, Mark and Eduardo debate Sean's pitch, with Eduardo skeptical and Mark taken by the marlin idea.

GRETCHEN
I’m going to enter this into the record.
Incorporation papers for Facebook, an LLC
registered in Florida--
(to EDUARDO for the record)
Why Florida?
EDUARDO
That’s where my family lives.
GRETCHEN
--and ask the respondent to stipulate
that the articles of incorporation state
the ownership as follows: 65 percent for
Mark Zuckerberg, 30 percent for Eduardo
Saverin and 5 percent for Dustin
Moskovitz.
SY
We stipulate.
GRETCHEN
And that was April 13th, 2004.
SY
You can mark it.
GRETCHEN
(to SY)
Do you have anything here?
SY
Yes, thank you. Mr. Saverin, have you
ever done anything that might be
considered legitimate grounds for
termination?
EDUARDO
No.
SY
You never did anything to embarrass the
company or even seriously jeopardize it?
EDUARDO
(beat)
No.
SY
No?
EDUARDO
No.
SY
You were accused of animal cruelty.
EDUARDO
(pause)
Wait--
SY
You weren’t?
EDUARDO
This isn’t happening.
SY
I have an article here from The Crimson--
EDUARDO
