Scene 18 of 189 · ≈ 1 min on screen · Act one
Mark Zuckerberg wants status and belonging Harvard's final clubs won't give him, so he builds a website that gives the world both — and loses his best friend and co-founder to the company he built to prove he mattered.
Mark at the campus bar: brilliant, status-obsessed, unable to read the room he's sitting in.
Amid the club's body shots and dancing, Mark's voiceover races through hacking Adams, Quincy, Dunster and Leverett's house facebooks one by one.
Eduardo Saverin rushes upstairs to Mark's room as Mark declares his scraping done.
Eduardo learns Mark and Erica split up from his blog and gets recruited on the spot to hand over his chess-ranking algorithm for rating female students.
This scene
EDUARDO is writing an equation with a grease marker on the window. When the equation’s done it looks like this:
Girl A:
Ea =
1 + 10(Rb - Ra) / 400
Girl B:
Eb =
1 + 10(Ra - Rb) / 400
EDUARDO
Give each girl a base rating of 1400. At
any given time “Girl A” has a rating R-a
and “Girl B” has a rating R-b.
MARK
When any two girls are matched up there’s
an expectation of which will win based on
their current rating, right?
EDUARDO
(tapping the window)
Yes. And those expectations are expressed
this way.
MARK
Let’s write it.
