Scene 70 of 189 · ≈ 1 min on screen
Mark Zuckerberg wants status and belonging Harvard's final clubs won't give him, so he builds a website that gives the world both — and loses his best friend and co-founder to the company he built to prove he mattered.
Mark at the campus bar: brilliant, status-obsessed, unable to read the room he's sitting in.
He wants to matter — to be let into the final clubs, to be exceptional enough that Erica's verdict is wrong — and Facemash is the first proof-of-concept.
Cameron, Tyler, and Divya recruit Mark to build HarvardConnection — the idea that becomes Facebook arrives from outside him.
Gretchen suggests jealousy over Eduardo's Phoenix punch drove Mark's plan, and Mark shuts her down by pointing out his own wealth now dwarfs the club's cachet.
Eduardo heads off to his Phoenix party, leaving Mark alone with his thoughts.
In deposition, Eduardo testifies that Mark told him he'd looked at HarvardConnection and found it not worth his time.
This scene
Two printouts of web pages are taped to a white board-- ”Friendster” and “MySpace”. Under the two pages, MARK draws a third page and titles it “NewCo”.
