EXT. VALLEY BETWEEN TWO MOUNTAINS - NIGHT

A dying fire. A flat stone has been dragged aside. Beneath it, steps go down into the dark.

THE MAGICIAN (60s), a stranger from Africa in a traveller’s cloak, kneels at the edge and feeds the fire a pinch of incense.

ALADDIN (15) climbs into the firelight, his shirt heavy with stones that glitter like fruit. An old copper lamp is pressed to his chest. The last step is too high. He reaches up.

ALADDIN

Uncle. Give me your hand.

The Magician does not move. His eyes are on the lamp.

THE MAGICIAN

Patience, nephew. Give me the lamp first.

Aladdin pushes the lamp inside his shirt. He keeps his eyes on his uncle’s empty hands.
