Story development software that remembers your choices

Developing a story often means returning to the same person, relationship or question over many sessions. Screenplay.Company is being built to preserve that understanding, including what you have chosen and what remains open. The desktop Studio is coming soon.

Find the pressure inside your idea

You may begin with a brother and sister who no longer speak, a place that is about to disappear, or a person who cannot admit what they want. An idea becomes dramatic when someone has to act under pressure and their action has a cost.

Story development explores that pressure before forcing the material into a neat premise. Who wants what? Why now? What relationship makes a choice difficult? Which unanswered question is carrying the story? A useful creative partner follows your material and asks the consequential question.

Separate what you chose from what you considered

A notebook can hold both “her father is missing” and “maybe her father left voluntarily.” If a later session treats both as fact, the story starts contradicting itself. Remembering means preserving the status and source of an idea, not merely keeping every sentence.

Story Space is the Studio’s intended shared memory. It holds your original expression, people, relationships, places, choices, possibilities and open questions. The same understanding supports Characters, Outline and Scenes, so you should not need to repeat a decision in every workspace.

An original illustrative development note showing different kinds of story material.
Established by the writer
The siblings have not spoken since their mother’s funeral.
A possibility
Perhaps the brother believes his sister concealed something before the funeral.
Still unresolved
What would force them to trust each other now?

Understand a person through their behavior

Characters need more than a profile of traits. What do they do when telling the truth threatens a relationship? Whom do they protect when protection has a price? A contradiction becomes useful when it creates a choice we can watch.

Characters is designed for sustained exploration of those people and relationships. It works with the same person introduced in a story fragment or outline beat. Discovering a motive can deepen an existing scene; behavior in a scene can challenge an earlier reading of the character.

Follow a revision through the story

Suppose you decide that the brother knew about the concealed event all along. That changes the information underneath earlier scenes. His silence may now be protection, guilt or an attempt to make his sister confess. The revision reaches further than one character note.

The Studio’s direction is to surface those consequences with their basis. You remain responsible for deciding which interpretation is true and which scenes to revise. A collaborator can identify the affected material without replacing your pages on its own.

This is also why development and writing need to remain connected. The outline tests the person through action. The written scene tests whether the intended choice is visible. You can move between those focuses without starting the story over.

Continue with a useful open question

Try three short lists in your current notebook: what I have chosen, what I am considering, and what I still need to understand. Pick the question whose answer would change the most important character choice. That gives the next session a purpose.

The coming-soon Studio will work with your own Codex or Claude Code account on Mac and Windows. Today, the Reading Room and First Principles give you public material to study while developing your own story.

Questions before you begin

Does a collaborator decide what is true in my story?

No. Writer authority is central to the planned Studio. Possibilities remain proposals until you choose them; scene direction and revisions remain yours to approve.

Is Story Space a separate story from the screenplay?

No. Story Space, Characters, Outline, Scenes and Script focus on the same evolving story. Their purpose is to connect understanding with structure and writing.
