INT. CAPULET HOUSE - JULIET’S CHAMBER - NIGHT

The door closes on the Nurse’s lantern. Below, servants are hanging garlands for a wedding.

JULIET (13) stands alone in her nightdress. On the bed: a small glass vial, and a knife.

JULIET

Farewell. God knows when we shall meet again.

She lays the knife on the pillow, within reach.

The window stands open on the balcony. The garden below is empty.

She uncorks the vial and holds it to the candle. The liquid is clear. Her hand is not steady.

JULIET

Romeo, I come! This do I drink to thee.

She drinks it all. She falls back across the bed. The candle burns on.

Scene plan Before a word is written, the scene’s purpose is agreed. By you.

Juliet

Characters

Wants
A life with Romeo, chosen by her and not her father.
Fears
Waking in the tomb before he comes.
Contradiction
Trusts the Friar with her life. Keeps a knife in case he’s wrong.

She drinks it believing it may be poison.

“What if she half believes it’s poison and drinks it anyway? Not because she trusts the Friar. Because waking up married to Paris is worse. That’s the bravest thing anyone does in the play.”
