Scene 173 of 189 · ≈ 1 min on screen · Act two
Mark Zuckerberg wants status and belonging Harvard's final clubs won't give him, so he builds a website that gives the world both — and loses his best friend and co-founder to the company he built to prove he mattered.
Mark at the campus bar: brilliant, status-obsessed, unable to read the room he's sitting in.
He wants to matter — to be let into the final clubs, to be exceptional enough that Erica's verdict is wrong — and Facemash is the first proof-of-concept.
He takes the Winklevoss pitch as a springboard, builds theFacebook in its place, and launches it into a world he can't control.
Expansion to Yale, Columbia, Stanford; the move to Palo Alto; the costs mount — Eduardo sidelined, the twins circling, the company outgrowing its dorm-room shape.
Eduardo signs re-incorporation paperwork at the new Facebook office, discovering his ownership stake actually rose to 34.4% while Mark's dropped, and Christy sets his gift on fire.
In deposition, a devastated Eduardo recalls that he trusted the paperwork's lawyers as his own and that his father still won't look at him.
Mark tells Eduardo to come back for the party celebrating Facebook's millionth member, and Eduardo agrees, recalling the algorithm on Mark's dorm window.
This scene
A brand new black Escalade pulls up in front of a gleaming glass and chrome office building. SEAN is at the wheel and MARK, in the passenger seat, is wearing brightly colored pajamas with his hair a mess.
They get out of the car and huddle on the sidewalk.
MARK
You sure about this?
SEAN
You’re 20 minutes late. You’re going to
walk in there and say you overslept and
you didn’t have time to get dressed.
They’re gonna pitch you. Case Equity is
gonna pitch you. They’re gonna beg you to
take their money. You’re gonna nod,
you’re gonna nod, you’re gonna nod and
then you’re gonna say, “Which one of you
is Roth--” No, not Roth, Manningham.
“Which one of you is Mitchell
Manningham?”. And he’ll say, “I am”. And
you say, “Sean Parker says ‘Fuck you’ and
on walk out.
MARK
(pause)
Okay.
