After PhD candidate Kate Dibiasky discovers a comet on a direct collision course with Earth, she and Professor Randall Mindy try to persuade a politically distracted President, a media-saturated public, and a powerful technology company to stop it before impact.

They discover the impact deadline and need the government and public to respond, but Orlean refuses immediate action.

RANDALL

I’m looking at it right now, too.

It’s unbelievable. It’s horrific,

and it’s beautiful at the same

time.

(to the crowd)

We’ve been trying to tell you! We

tried to tell you this whole time.

It’s right there! It’s... It’s

right there, Kate.

KATE

Where are you?

RANDALL

I’m in Lansing, Michigan trying to

fix things with June, but she won’t

talk to me. Where are you?

KATE

I-

RANDALL

I’m gonna come find you, okay?

KATE

Well, I’m in Illinois. I could be

ready by tomorrow. Yeah I’m-

(kneels down to pray)
